Phlebotomist Certification and Training Information

Phlebotomist Training Info

There are many options in phlebotomist training and certification.

Some phlebotomy jobs don’t require the technician to have any special training but there seems to be a big increase the push for licensing. The health care industry is ever changing and its relationship with the health insurance sector leads continues to lead to more and more personnel training and certifications, supposedly to limit legal liabilities. It’s cheaper to send a tech to phlebotomy classes for certified phlebotomist training than to pay off a law suit.

Phlebotomist Drawing Blood

What Is A Phlebotomist?

Have you ever gone to the hospital and had someone to take a sample of your blood? If you have then you know how important blood samples are. The person that draws your blood is called a phlebotomist. They are trained to locate a good vein and draw blood samples without injuring the patient. Many people are frightened of needles; part of the phlebotomist training is to help make the patient as comfortable as possible, prep the patient, and then draw his or her blood. They are then required to label the tubes and place them inside small tube racks and transport them to the lab.

This job is not for everyone. Some people faint at the sight of blood, while others are squeamish when it comes to giving shots. If any of these personalities fit you then you are not ready to become a phlebotomist. You must have a pleasant and calm persona, pay attention to even the smallest details, know what procedures to follow in case of an emergency, show respect for authority, and follow all the safety guidelines for working safely within this medical environment. Duties and responsibilities may not be performed at one site all the time; the phlebotomist may need to go to the patients room, to a onsite community event, or a sponsoring testing site that may be short handed. To become one of these medical professionals you must attend phlebotomy classes or take a phlebotomy course.

Phlebotomy classes usually last about four months to a year. However, this depends on how far you want to take your career, and how much you are willing to pay. The complete online course costs about 1,500 to 3,000 dollars. Nevertheless, most students may choose to pay extra for the hands on experience and knowledge, which can only be obtained through a classroom setting. The student is also taught how to use each piece of equipment he or she will be working with, this includes how to assemble, disassemble, and adjust each tool.

How To Become A Phlebotomist

Everyone regardless of what degree they plan to pursue must start with the basic classes in phlebotomist training, which begins with physiology, and anatomy and how to draw blood. Many states do not require a phlebotomist to be certified or licensed, but many states do. Most courses require 40 hours of classroom time, in addition to 40 hours of practice in a clinical setting, at least 50 vein punctures, and approximately 10 skin punctures before they are eligible for a license. Check with your state requirements for obtaining a license or certification in phlebotomy. Many entry level phlebotomy jobs start out on a part time schedule, and eventually they earn more experience, and later move up to be full time staff members.

Phlebotomist Certification

Good Job Opportunities Are Available With Phlebotomist Certification

In the field of medicine there are a number of jobs designed for technicians. A person with phlebotomist certification can find work in a number of facilities including health centers, hospitals, large clinics, drug testing centers, blood banks and plasma centers to name a few. This job entails drawing blood for use in testing or medical procedures. This individual works side by side with other health care professionals and needs to perform the procedures in a timely fashion to avoid creating stress for the patient. A person holding a valid phlebotomy license can also work with paramedics in emergency situations.

A phlebotomist certification is given upon completion of a certified course. A course for this position is usually offered through colleges and vocational schools, which also offer other medical training. The course itself is usually no longer than two to four months making it an easy career to move into. In order to take the classes a prospective applicant needs to hold a valid high school diploma or GED. Upon completion of the course, the student needs to take the certification exam in order to receive their phlebotomy certificate. Different states and countries will have different laws governing the certification of this profession.
The availability of jobs after receiving a phlebotomist certification is on the increase as compared to most other jobs. In fact the healthcare industry is one of the few industries that are having great gains even in poor economic times. One of the reasons for this is the “greying” of the baby-boomer generation. As our population gets older on a percentage basis the need for better and higher capacity healthcare grows.
The expected need for technicians in phlebotomy and other heath fields is also increasing because of the shortage and the demands put on Registered Nurses and other highly trained professionals. These RN’s, for example, do not have time to draw blood as they have done in the past. It makes good sense to take as many responsibilities off their shoulders as possible especially when a task can be done by someone with special training and that is being paid less than the RN.

Phlebotomy Training

The phlebotomy courses will train the student in how to locate veins within different areas of the body. They will also learn how to properly insert a needle to avoid bruising the tissues. Proper insertion is also important to avoid blood loss, which often occurs when a needle is improperly inserted causing leaking to occur. In addition to the medical procedures, students will also learn the legal aspects involved with drawing blood. Hygiene is also an essential element because a lot of diseases can be transferred through contact with bodily fluids.

There are some instances when a person can find employment in this position without having phlebotomist certification. Facilities such as blood banks and plasma centers often train people to perform the duties required. This training might allow the individual to work in other areas after they have become experienced, but it is not guaranteed. Salaries for phlebotomy jobs range from fourteen to twenty dollars an hour with most centers offering an hourly rate. This job also places the worker in direct contact with the patient so it is beneficial to have good people skills to keep patients calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Healthcare workers are expected to gains in salary ranges over the next years. As with any business the price of a service is based on in part the demand for the service compared with the number of qualified people to perform the service. If there are not enough RN’s to work at the hospital in a city then the hospital will be forced to pay more and try to bring in RN’s from other places. This in turn raises the salary paid to existing employed RN’s too.

The most common way to be prepared for certification testing is phlebotomy training in California community colleges, junior colleges and technical schools. Cabrilla College in Aptos and Cuesta College in San Louis Obispo are examples of institutions that offer certificate programs that prepare students for the licensing exam.

Universal Schools and Colleges is a program for phlebotomy training in San Diego that offers a state approved program. For phlebotomy training in Los Angeles, California Technical Education College and LA Vocational Institute are some of the many programs available.

While all programs teach students how to draw blood, there are many aspects of the field to learn. Students must learn how to prevent the spread of disease or infection.

In addition to classroom theory, students will complete an internship at a local facility. Many hospitals and clinics serve as sites for internships. Classroom labs are often utilized so that students learn techniques before working with patients. In some programs students practice on each other. Phlebotomy Jobs – Now and the Future

The medical community is increasing the use of tests in the diagnosis of illnesses and general health screening. The reason for this increase, according to the Bureau of Labor, is that there are more and more tests that come available due to research and the population increase. The increasing use of genetics seems to be one large factor. It is also a well know fact that the population of the US is getting older by average. This all leads to a greater need for phlebotomist.

Go For It !

The number of phlebotomy jobs are expected to continue to increase more rapidly than the number of available qualified technicians. The increase is expected to average over 14 percent per year. This is substantially higher than most other professions. Over half of the jobs are in hospitals but this includes all areas of clinical laboratory personnel.

The negative side of phlebotomist jobs and clinical professionals could come from new technology. As testing procedures become more automated less qualified technicians may be able read the results. It would seem how ever that this would affect the Laboratory Technologist (usually a bachelor degree level of tech) working in the lab more than the phlebotomist working with the patients. I don’t think anyone is thinking that machines will be able to draw our blood any time soon.

It seems that the phlebotomy position is a good profession to work into higher, better paying careers in healthcare. The Laboratory Technician is generally a person with a 2 year or Associates degree. The jump from a phlebotomy to a lab tech can almost double a persons salary so this is something to consider. The Laboratory Technologist is a four year degree and there are many other levels in the laboratory science area all the way to lab director which is at least a Masters Degree or maybe even doctorate.

Some certifications come through The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or NAACLS which approves about 60 in phlebotomy and clinical assistant programs. Others include the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. Each of these agencies have different requirements to recieve certification as well as organizational sponsors
